Morgan Wright's '54 88
This is a New York car. I don't know why it isn't rusted to scrap by now
on our salted roads unless it sat in a climate controlled garage for
most of its life. It has 114,000 miles on it, which sounds like a lot
but it works out to be about 2,600 miles per year for 44 years.
It has never been restored. Everything is original, from the paint to
all the parts under the hood. Any replacement parts are "new old stock,"
even the oil filter is NOS and the car came with a dozen NOS oil
filters. Rotor and cap are NOS. Wiper blades are NOS. Only the tires and
battery are new. The outside is cherry but the seats, door panels, and
sun visors are rotted. It runs perfectly and purrs like a cat on the
The rear plate says ROCKET88 which I think is cool because of the Old
Jackie Brenston and Ike Turner tune by that name:
"You women have heard of jalopies
You've heard the noise they make
Well let me introduce my new Rocket 88
Yes it's great, just won't wait
Everybody likes my Rocket 88
Baby we'll ride in style
Moving all along.
V8 motor and this modern design
Black convertible top and the gals don't mind
Sporting with me riding all 'round town for joy
(Blow your horn baby, blow)
Step in my Rocket and don't be late
Baby we're pulling out about half past 8
Going round the corner and get a fifth
Everybody in my car's gonna take a little nip
Move on out, boozing and cruising along"
