Tom Wooten's '70 Cutlass 'S'
Here is my 70 Cutlass 'S' that I have owned since just before graduating high school in 1986. I
worked on the project for a few years then put it on hold until I finished college and was able to
finish the job correctly.
Finally in 1994 I was able to start up again, and spent the next year
finishing it. Here is a summary of the modifications I made to it: The engine is a rebuilt 455 out
of a 69 Delta 88. It has stock 9:1 compression, a mild Crane Cam, C heads and a stock 4 barrel
intake and Quadrajet. The ignition system is a stock GM HEI fired by an MSD 6A. It is topped off
with Taylor wires, Edelbrock chrome valve covers and a 4" tall K&N air cleaner. The trans is a 400
out of the same Delta and has been upgraded with a shift kit, TCI Saturday Nite Special Converter,
and a trans cooler. Rear end is a stock 2.73 10 bolt posi out of a 72 Cutlass. The front drum
brakes were replaced with a stock disc system. The wheels are 15x7 Weld Pro Stars wrapped in BF
Goodrich Radial TA's, and the exhaust system consists of Walker headers, 2-1/2" pipes up front going
into Walker CVX turbos, 2-1/4" tail pipes and stock 442 chrome tips. Rear bumper is an original 442
model found in a junkyard for $15 and rechromed.
The interior was upgraded with a stock auto
console and shifter, new carpet and seat covers, Auto Meter guages and tach, and a Clarion AM/FM
Cassette. Rusty quarters were replaced by In Line Auto Body in Columbia, MO, who also did the paint
job. The color was selected from an 85 Camaro. I have had it at the track a few times since
completion, running a best of 13.87. It runs and drives great and turns heads wherever it goes.
